Here’s How To Clean Dirty Bed Pillows to Give Them Whiteness and a Sweet Scent
Pillows look innocent. They are not. Sweat, skin oils, dust, and time turn them yellow and slightly unpleasant, even if you change pillowcases religiously. The good news is most pillows are not ruined. They are just overdue for a proper wash.
This is the method that actually works.
First, check the pillow type
This applies to cotton, down, and most synthetic pillows. Memory foam and latex are different creatures. Do not put those in the washing machine unless you enjoy regret.
What you need
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Hot water
- Tennis balls or dryer balls

Step 1. Wash two pillows at once
Always wash pillows in pairs. This keeps the machine balanced and prevents aggressive spinning that damages them.
Set the washer to:
- Hot water
- Long or heavy cycle
Heat helps break down oils. Cold water politely does nothing.
Step 2. Add the whitening mix
In the detergent compartment:
- Normal amount of liquid detergent
Directly into the drum:
- 1/2 cup baking soda
Baking soda lifts stains and neutralizes odors instead of masking them.
Step 3. Extra rinse with vinegar
Run an extra rinse cycle and add:
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
This removes detergent residue and leaves pillows softer and fresher. The vinegar smell disappears completely once dry.
Step 4. Dry properly or don’t bother
Drying is not optional. Damp pillows grow smells.
- Use medium to low heat
- Add tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps
- Dry until completely dry, then run another 10 minutes
If there is any moisture inside, keep drying.

Step 5. Air them out
If possible, let pillows sit in fresh air or sunlight for a few hours. This boosts freshness and helps maintain whiteness.
The result
Pillows look visibly whiter, feel fluffier, and smell clean instead of vaguely old. Not perfume-clean. Actually clean.
How often
Every 3 to 4 months. More often if you sweat at night or live in a warm climate.
Clean pillows are not a luxury. They are basic hygiene that most people ignore until the yellow gives them away. Clean them properly and they feel new again, without replacing anything or spraying fake scents on top of the problem.
